Not everyday. You could feed a little more than usual on teh day before you leave. Give it a hotdog. Then when you come back feed it regular. If you give it too much it may become inpacted.

  2. nascarfan2438 says:

once a day, but if your not there, they will survive eating every other day.

  3. Madkins007 says:

    1. Hot dogs, hamburger, and plain lettuce are TERRIBLE foods for turtles. Please do not ever use them.

    2. It would help to know what kind of turtle this is.

Most turtles will do perfectly well eating every other day- the trick is making this work in a healthy way for it, and a convenient way for you.

Pond turtles, because of their messy habits, would be best fed in a seperate, easy to clean tank, and leave them there to eat and defecate in. That will keep your main tank cleaner. These guys can be ‘loaded’ when you feed them by just giving them a slightly larger meal when you do feed them. Once in a while, you can leave a feeder fish or two swimming in the tank while you are gone.

Young pond turtles are energetic so need a pretty regular diet.

Box turtles are insect eaters, and their droppings are less obnoxious, so you can give them a decent meal when you are around, and drop in a few crickets for them to hunt while you are gone.

Boxies are moderately energetic, so need regular meals, but every other day should be plenty.

Tortoises are vegetarians, and have even ‘nicer’ droppings. Although most of their food should be removed after an hour or so, you can still leave sweet Timothy hay or alfalfa, some of the prepared chows, etc. in there while you are gone, or you can offer a live plan for them to graze on.

Tortoises are sedentary animals so can go well with less frequent meals.

Let us know the species (and how many) and we can offer more specific advice!

I fed mine a couple times a day, but everyother day is good. Make sure you give it a high Vit A diet, or it may go blind. Mine did, and when turtles are blind they don’t smell their food and slowly starve to death. Finally when mine started to regain her sight she had starved too long and died. i cried my eyes out.

If you read the NEWS of today. . in India there was one Turtle who died today in their ZOO. . they claim it was 250 years old. . this is only side news.

  6. brins_too_cool says:

You need to feed turtles twice a day.

  7. seawavblue says:

once every week . i lost my turtle for a month and found it healthy she got stuck under my kitchen cabinet i thought she was dead but she was not a gave it some tomato pieces and little water she start walking happy so a week to 10 days will not harm it.

  8. lauramcrawford says:

I was told by a reptile handler that youre only supposed to feed them once a week. . . Frozen beefheart is good. We feed ours twice a week and she has grown to be strong , healthy and very large. However if your turtle is an infant (and depending on the breed) you may have to feed it every day or second day.

  9. guppygirl421 says:

Turtles become too fat and obese if it is fed to often. That’s why you should feed it every other day. One rule of thumb is to only give the amount of food that would fit in his head and neck. The only time you should feed him is when he is possibly sick or noticeably underweight.

  10. amberharris20022000 says:

    once a week

about every other day . . . it depends on the size

  13. prettyprincesscc says:

I would say about once a day. Even if there is food from the other day that they didn’t eat, take that out and feed them new food. But that is for water turtles. For land turtles, you don’t have to feed them every day because they don’t eat much(unless yours does!) but other than that, just feed them well, the way I told you and you will be fine. Turtles arn’t that hard to take care of except for feeding, keeping them hydrated, and cleaning their cage. You should also clean his/her shell once in awhile. Because it can get pretty grimy after a few months. So probably twice two months, you can clean your turtle’s shell. You can get more info on google, vets, and pet store’s. I know you didn’t ask for all of this info, but I just wanted to make sure you take very good care of your turtle! Good luck!!!

  14. Life's Drifts says:

Assuming that the turtle is a ground tortoise the ideal meal may be an ear of cactus. This will last her for several days and will not spoil or smell. Jose

  15. chad_mercure2001 says:

    it should be feed daily.

  16. drizztbabe says:

i fed mine everyday until it ran away. . . . . don’t know how thats possible because they are really slow. but my advice is to never leave your turtle outside for more than 5 min.

  17. coke freak says:

Depending on the size, we would feed ours turtle food in pellet form and flakes but just enough for it to finish what had been put in the bowl, if it would eat it all we would put a little more till the turtle itself would walk/swim away from the food. every other day is OK. after a few feeding sessions you get a general idea of how much to feed.

  18. dianehacker says:

My friend had some of those tiny tiny turtles and she feed them a worm once a week.
Another friend has some big big turtles like you would only see in a zoo and she feed them every three days.

  19. southernbelle082288 says:

I have red eared sliders and I feed them every 1 to 2 days. If they are young turtles they need to be fed daily. It will not hurt them if they do not eat every day because sometimes mine won’t eat for 4 or 5 days at a time and they are fine.

  20. semisnugzz says:

at least once a day, you don’t want them dying of hunger. . . .

  21. chubbybloke2004 says:

I hope this is of help, I have kept turtles, of many species, and have many years of knowledge.

Turtles should be fed daily, as much as they will eat. A turtle in good condition can exist in good health for weeks without food. This makes it simple for people who are away for weekends, or even for a week or two on holiday, just make sure the turtle has has good water, and any food not eaten within a few hours, should be removed to prevent fouling the container.

As long as the your turtle, is in good condition, and the container its in, is kept clean, leaving it for 24 hours without food is not the ideal solution, but I dont think it will come to any harm. Also depending on what type you have depends on what you should be feeding it. I hope your feeding the correct type of food, a local pet shop, one that specialises in aquatic animals, should be able to advise you, or a visit to the library.
Its also woth concidering a visit to a vet, to ask for information.

    I hope this helps. . . . . .

you could feed your turtles after you eat your own meal. treat your pet as a person that needs to eat at least 3 times a day. don’t let your pet experience over-feeding. believe me he will get sick. and also you could let your pet eat rice they really need it.

  31. ever1wolf says:

    Not fer nuthin, just fun,,,smiles.

If you put a finger into the tank, and they are hungry, they may decide you have,,,or are,,,FOOD.

Reptiles, in general have a metabolism that allows their food intake to be sporadic, often non sequentually scheduled, and less often than mammals or birds.

Example: A Snake for instance may need to eat only once a week. I had a Red Rat Snake who managed a form of diet control, when lost for 4 months in my SUV, without food or water. She went into a state of hibernation I assume.

FEED EM when ya can, and hug em too once in awhile,,,smiles.

  33. DC says:

Turtles that are overfed can become obese, just as other animals (and people) can. Although no definitive studies have been done on the health consequences of obesity in chelonians, I feel that it is best to err on the side of caution. Turtles are trapped in their shells – too much excess flesh could compress and injure internal organs. A decreased lifespan or chronic health problems may also be consequences of obesity. Within a few months of hatching, turtles can be put on an every-other-day feeding schedule. Aquatic turtles can be fed in separate containers, in order to monitor how much food each animal is eating. Each turtle receives as much food as it can eat in a few minutes. One rule of thumb is to feed the turtle as much food as would fit in its head and neck. The only time one can provide more food or feed more often is when a turtle is sick or noticeably underweight. At that point, a more frequent feeding schedule is desired, to help the turtle in its recovery. An alternate-day feeding schedule, especially on hatchlings, might seem to be rather limiting. However, keep in mind the normal environments of most turtles. They are not fed top-quality food every day (or even more often than that!) in the wild. They grow slowly but steadily, except those species that hibernate or estivate. For many tortoises, the best balance is a high-fiber, low protein diet of mainly grasses with occasional vegetables and fruits. For semi-aquatic turtles, a combination of vegetables and insects would be appropriate, while for land turtles, an omnivorous diet of vegetables, fruits, insects, earthworms and other invertebrates should be provided.

Not everyday. Just make sure you feed them regularly. Some fun facts to share. . . Other than those turtle food, you can also give them fish, frogs, any leftovers you don’t want. . . as long as they are not too greasy. . . not cooked. . . fresh. . . I used to do that. . . make sure they are not obese. . . =P

Do not feed them hot dogs?! They are horrible food for turtles. What type of turtle do you have? This determines the type of nutritional intake that they need. Most turtles and tortises do not need to be fed everyday (eventhough some of them would love to be).

  47. moorejjoni8 says:

It depends on what kind of turtle and the size. I’ve had
a couple of different kinds. Feed it raw hamburger before you leave and see how much it eats. When you leave feed accordingly and leave lettuce or greens for it to eat while you are gone. Good choice for a pet if you are not home all the time. Hope this helps.
